Due to seasonal weather conditions and increasing fire danger, the open burning season for the City of Pendleton, Rieth Water District, Lower McKay, McKay Dam, and Riverside Fire Districts is closed effective immediately.

Open burning is expected to reopen on October 1, 2026, weather permitting. During the closed burning season, the outdoor burning of yard debris, stumps, field burns, and bonfires is prohibited.

Burn barrels are prohibited within Pendleton city limits year-round pursuant to City ordinance. Outside the city limits, burn barrels may be used during the closed burning season only on Umatilla County-designated "Green Days."  Residents must verify that it is a Green Day before using a burn barrel by calling the Umatilla County Burn Line at 541-278-6397.  During the open burning season, current burning information may be obtained through the City Burn Line at 541-966-0327.

Residential wood-burning fire pits and fire tables are subject to State and City summer burn bans and may be restricted during periods of elevated fire danger. Propane and natural gas fire pits and fire tables are exempt from seasonal burn closures and may be used year-round unless otherwise restricted by emergency fire regulations.

It is unlawful to conduct any open burning that unreasonably interferes with the enjoyment of life or property, creates a public or private nuisance, or poses a threat to public safety. Any fire determined to be a nuisance or hazard may be ordered extinguished immediately.

For a complete list of burning regulations, visit the City's website at www.pendletonor.gov/fire or contact Fire Station 1 at 1455 SE Court Avenue, Pendleton, Oregon (541-276-1442)
