Grant focused on improving building security in downtown Pendleton
The Pendleton Development Commission (PDC) has launched a new Security Lighting and Camera Reimbursement Grant Program aimed at improving public safety and supporting downtown revitalization.
The new program provides funding to eligible commercial and residential property owners within the Pendleton Urban Renewal District to help offset the cost of installing exterior security lighting and security cameras.
“This program is a direct response to community feedback,” said Charles Denight, associate director of the Pendleton Development Commission. “In surveys of both downtown businesses and individuals, security was identified as the number one priority during our Five-Year Urban Renewal Strategic Planning process. Working with individuals and with our local police chief, the PDC developed this program to support tools to help make downtown safer for everyone.”
Eligible properties must be located within the downtown “River to Rail, Sixth to Sixth” zone, bounded by Southwest 6th Street to the west, Southeast 6th Street to the east, the Umatilla River to the north, and the Union Pacific Railroad to the south. The program will distribute up to $10,000 in total funding, offering up to $500 per commercial storefront and up to $250 per residential property within the district.
To qualify, all installations must be approved in advance, meet code requirements, and be completed by licensed contractors when applicable. Camera installations must also be registered with the Pendleton Police Department, which will help with identifying and prosecuting perpetrators of crimes.
This grant program supports one of the four areas of investment highlighted in the PDC’s Five-Year Urban Renewal Strategic Planning Initiative: improve security downtown. Pendleton City Council also identified improving safety and security in downtown as a priority in its 2025-2028 Strategic Plan.
Applications are available through the Pendleton Development Commission and will be accepted until available funding is exhausted.
