Smoke and burnt brush near Sunridge Middle School

No one was hurt and no residences lost in a fire yesterday afternoon near Sunridge Middle School.

Reported just before 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, the fire burned about 62 acres between the school and the KOA campground in the southwest corner of Pendleton. Most of the fire burned in brush, but there was property damage. 

“There is a large area of large pieces of wood that will burn at least all night and probably days,” Fire Chief Anthony Pierotti said. 

Firefighters remained on scene during the night and will re-evaluate the fire today. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

In addition to Pendleton Fire and Ambulance, resources from BIA, tribal fire, Boardman Fire Department, Umatilla Rural Fire Department, East Umatilla Fire, Echo Fire Department, Morrow County Fire Department and La Grande Fire Department responded.
