2026 event takes place at Pendleton Recreation Center

The Pendleton Friends of the Library will hold its PFOL Annual Book Sale Oct. 23-25 at the Pendleton Recreation Center, 510 SW Dorion Ave.

Located next to the Pendleton Public Library, the Rec Center will make it easier to move books from the sorting room below the library to the sale. In previous years, volunteers loaded thousands of books onto dozens of pallets, transported them by tractor-trailer to the Pendleton Convention Center and then spent five days unloading and setting up for the sale. The PFOL board hopes the new location will significantly reduce that commitment.

For buyers, the Annual Book Sale will operate much the same way as it has in the past. The new  Rec Center location will allow for better-defined sections for special categories, including children’s and rare and exceptional books. Tables will be labeled by categories, and signs will be posted to direct buyers.

The Annual Book Sale is PFOL’s largest fundraiser of the year, featuring more than 50,000 books and media for sale, including children’s books, adult fiction, nonfiction, music CDs and DVDs, as well as ephemera and bookish gifts. All funds raised go to PFOL to support programs, materials and other needs at the Pendleton Public Library.

Sale dates for the 2026 Book Sale are:

  • $5 Early Bird Sale - Friday, October 23rd from 7-9pm
  • General Sale - Saturday, October 24th from 10am - 8pm
  • General Sale - Sunday, October 25th from 10am - 2pm
  • $3 Bag Sale - Sunday, October 25th from 3pm-5pm

Friday will be a special presale night accessed with a $5 admission cost. Admission to the General Sale on Saturday and Sunday will be free, as will admission to the Bag Sale, where shoppers can fill a bag with books or electronic media and pay only $3 for the entire bag. Bookish gifts, rare and exceptional books will be excluded from the bag sale. All books are sold first-come, first-served, and books cannot be reserved or placed on hold.

PFOL is looking for volunteers from Thursday, Oct. 22, through Sunday, Oct. 25. Anyone interested in volunteering before or during the Book Sale can reach out via email to PendletonFriendsOfTheLibrary [at] gmail.com (PendletonFriendsOfTheLibrary[at]gmail[dot]com).

Most of the materials sold during the PFOL Annual Book Sale come from community donations. Donations of 20 boxes or fewer are accepted on Monday evenings at the back door of Pendleton City Hall, 500 SW Dorion Ave. Donations of more than 20 boxes must be made by appointment. Please note PFOL does not accept donations of textbooks, encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest, magazines or computer/software manuals.

PFOL does not accept book donations in October to prepare for the sale but will resume those donations Nov. 9.

About the Pendleton Friends of the Library:

Pendleton Friends of the Library began in 1981 when a group of concerned individuals saw the need for an organization to support our library at a time of economic difficulty. Our goals are to focus public attention on our library’s services, facilities, and needs; and to stimulate gifts of books, magazines, desirable collections, endowments, bequests, and memorials to enhance our library and its service to the community.
